Serpentine

The serpentine group describes a group of common rock-forming hydrous magnesium iron phyllosilicate minerals. It is an ultramafic rock related to the Pounamu family and requires heat, tectonic movement and just the right conditions to form. Usually occurring in different shades of green these very dark beach polished pebbles are collected from South Westland NZ beaches. Serpentine is a mineral used for its spiritual and healing qualities. These stones are naturally polished by the rivers and ocean, giving them a very smooth and tactile feel.
